OpenAI announced several details on June 13, 2023 about updates and new features in its language models, including GPT-3.5 Turbo and GPT-4.

Function Calling Capabilities

With this new update, developers can now define functions for GPT-3.5 Turbo and GPT-4 models and have JSON objects with arguments to call those functions. This technology enables more reliable integration of models and external tools with APIs, and allows retrieving structured data, converting APIs to powerful natural languages, and accurately extracting structured data from text

New GPT Models

  • GPT-4 Model: Updated and improved model with function call capabilities.
  • GPT-4-32k Model: Similar to GPT-4, but with extended description length for better understanding of text sizes.
  • GPT-3.5 Turbo-16k Model: Provides four times the reference length of standard GPT-3.5 Turbo, allowing support of up to 20 pages of text in a single request

Model Restrictions

The original GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo released in March are being upgraded, and applications using complex model names will automatically upgrade to the new models on June 27th. Older photos are still available through Sept. 13, after which requests referring to those images will fail.

Lower pricing

(Thank you, OpenAI! I truly felt this!)

  • Embeddings cost: text-embedding-ada-002 Reduced the cost of the embeddings model by 75% to $0.0001 per 1K token.
  • GPT-3.5 Turbo Cost: The cost of input tokens for GPT-3.5 Turbo has been reduced by 25%, making it available for $0.0015 per 1K input tokens and $0.002 per 1K output tokens. The 16k reference version of the GPT-3.5 Turbo costs $0.003 per 1K input

Conclusion

Like any great product or service, OpenAI emphasizes the importance of developer feedback and encourages users to provide input to help improve the platform and ensure a smooth transition to the updated models.
